Mad Max: Fury Road

"What a day! What a lovely day!"
                                                     -Nux the war boy

No you do not have to watch the three previous movies to understand this film, in fact this film may just get you into the previous ones. After ascending the challenges of the likes of Happy Feet, George Miller returns to the sandy oblivion of the Mad Max franchise with one of the best action films not only made in this decade, but probably this century!

While this is called 'Mad Max' people may be surprised to find that the characters around Max are more interesting, and that is because they are the ones that get all the development. Furiosa is one of the best female lead characters that I love (and ironically she has no love interest in the film) and she is just as badass as Max.

Speaking of Furiosa, Mad Max has one of the most diverse cast I have ever seen in a film. And no, I am not using diverse as in race, but diverse as in age. We have young kids, idealistic teenagers, awesome pants people in their prime, hell even old ladies on motorcycles kicking ass! Not only are there ages of all kinds, but none of them feel weak. Sure they have the 'weak link' character, but all of them has a presence and I think that should be applauded as a great achievement we don't see very often.

Now, if you are an action/adrenaline junkie then this film is for you. The first twenty minutes had me on the edge of my seat and my fingers grasping at my armrests because it was nearly non-stop action. And not only is the film predominately action, but you can see everything. Modern action films like to cut in close to either hide that they don't know what they are doing, to hide a stunt double, or think it actually improves a movie, but in Mad Max the majority of the shots are out wide and from a distance so you can see every detail of what is going on. And to make things more impressive most of the stunts you see are practical, so when you see something explode there is a 70% chance it really exploded.

Like all action films there are down times between the big spectacles, and like the rest of the film I ate those up. Miller doesn't waste any second in this film as he slowly builds/unfolds people's pasts and who everyone is, even if it's just one line. You really get to see how f----- upped
people are in their beliefs and determination.

This is one of the best movies of 2015, and I assure you this will be in my top 10 films of 2015. I already saw it twice within it's first two weeks, and I'll probably go see it a third time. While the story may be simple, the film reaches the peak in every department from cinematography to characters, to acting when it comes to a film like this. Unlike other films it takes advantage of music and applies it to the film in a way I don't think I've ever seen before. You'll be glued to your chair was your eyes explode from the amazingness that is Mad Max: Fury Road.
