"I am Iron Man."
-Tony
Kicking off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man makes a grand stand as a realistic comic movie that shocked the audience into thinking "hey comics are cool!" Yes that's right, not only is this a great movie, but it is also true to the character's origin. You can definitely feel the love that the people working on this film put into it. Sadly though, people tend to forget about this when discussing the MCU.
So, first off, this film is just beautiful. While considered a blockbuster, the techniques used were not grand and flashy, but more practical and physical which I really loved. There is CG (obviously) whenever Tony flies, and you can kind of see the age to it (wow has CG really developed since 2008!) but nevertheless it's still awesome to look at and not a negative in any way.
The characters were amazing. Robert Downy Jr really embodies Tony Stark, and you really love the guy. He's a rich playboy that has lots of fun, whips out a few funny quips and moves on. My favorite part of the movie is when his character is undergoing change in the cave. He really begins to think about the weapons he's manufactured and how his life is literally on the line.
Even smaller characters like Yensin, the guy in the cave with Tony, and Rhodey are really fun. Every character is memorable and has a purpose, especially the villain. Obadai Stane was an interesting villain. He used technology for evil and could have had a great opportunity to become a recurring villain, even if a cameo, but that will never happen.
The music, editing, and cinematography (basically everything) really meshes together to create one of the best made film in the MCU. I always love watching this, and it really makes you believe that superheroes could be real.
Now, other than giving us a kick-ass movie, this started off the MCU and therefore there were many hints at to what will happen. The most notable is the introduction of S.H.E.I.L.D. being an organization who is interested in public safety and will gather up the superheroes to initiate the Avengers program.
Another easter egg for comic fans was the fact that there were so many Mandarin references. I can't believe that I never caught them the first viewing, but going back now you see Tony being held by the Ten Rings, with the guy in charge has a big ass ring. O.O Yes, the Mandarin lives.
Altogether, this film is a very great film that really showcases Marvel's chops at bringing superheroes into the limelight. While often less talked about this is one of THE most important movies in the MCU, for if this was a flop, and the Indestructible Hulk was a flop, there would be no MCU.
